Bad Detectives

Rules of the game:

Setup:
  • Form teams of 2 players each. You should sit with someone from the opposing team on either side of you.
  • Shuffle the deck of cards and distribute them evenly amongst players.
  • Keep all your cards hidden from other players.

How to Play:
  • On your turn:
    • Player asking:
      • Look at your cards.
      • Ask any player on the opposing team for a card that could help you form a crime scene.  Remember that you must have at least 1 card from that story already in order to ask another player.
      • If the opposing player gives you the card you need, continue asking players on the opposing team.  If they do not have the card, the turn passes to that player. You are allowed to ask the same player repeatedly.
  • Player Answering:
    • When asked for a card, check the cards in your hand to see if you have it.  If you hold the card, you must give it up to the player who asked you.  Remember to be honest or else the game will not work!
    • If you do not have the card you have been asked for, the turn passes to you.
  • Passing Clues to Your Partner:
    • Remember to communicate with your partner stealthily by asking for meaningful cards from the other team.
      • For example, if you are trying to form Story #1 and you have the doctor card, you could ask for the hospital card to give a clue to your partner that you are trying to form that particular story.
  • How to Solve a Crime:
    • At any time in the game, you can declare a crime solved.
    • To declare:
      • Lay the cards you have from the crime face up on the table.
      • Ask your partner to reveal the cards they have from the crime you are solving.
        • You MUST know which cards your partner holds from the story to declare.
      • For Example: If you are solving Crime 1, you could declare Story 1 by putting down the Lab Coat,Syringe,Doctor and Hospital card and asking your partner to put down the Sunrise and Photographer card.
      • If your partner does not have the card you asked them to put down, your team loses the point from the story.
      • If one of the cards from your story is actually in the hands of a player from the opposing team, the point passes to their team.
  • How to win the Badge:
    • The squad that puts together the most stories wins the badge.
    • In the event of a tie, deal the cards again and the squad that solves the first crime wins the game.
  • Points to remember:
    • You must have a card from a story to ask other players for cards from that story!
    • You can only talk to /ask cards from members of the opposing team(s).
      • The only time you can talk to your partner is when you are declaring a story. Otherwise the only communication you have with your partner happens through clues.
    • You can declare a crime solved at any time. This does interfere with whose turn it is.
    • Keep all your cards hidden from other players (even those on your team)!

Example Game Play:
Mary, Jane, Kate and Ryan are playing Bad Detectives. Mary and Jane are on one team and Kate and Ryan are on the opposing team.
To start the game all the cards are dealt evenly and Mary starts off by asking Kate for the doctor card. (Now, Jane knows that Mary is working on the white set and she can mentally note the cards she holds in the white set.)
If Kate has the doctor card, she must give the card to Mary. If she does not, it becomes Kate’s turn and she can ask Mary or Ryan.
The game continues on and at a certain point Mary knows that she and Jane have all the cards in the white set. So she can at any point choose to declare the crime and say, “The doctor in the white labcoat killed the photographer in the hospital with a syringe at high noon” while putting down the lab coat card, the journalist card and the hospital card and asking Jane to put down the doctor card, the syringe card and the high noon card.
Since they have formed this set, their teams earns 1 point. If Jane does not hold the doctor, syringe or high noon card, the point passes to Kate and Ryan’s team.
